In July, Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett announced $1.5m in funding to help Christmas Island’s ecosystems with some of it to go towards saving the threatened pipistrelle from extinction.  Volunteers will attempt to capture remaining specimens from which to establish a captive breeding program.

The chances of the program succeeding are, however, considered low.
